08 Dec We are welcoming Mother Baby Yoga teacher Kristin to the team!
Kristin has discovered and rediscovered yoga many times in her life, especially during big life transitions, such as moving to a new home, becoming a mother and changing careers. She is trained in Mother Baby (postnatal) Yoga, Vinyasa Power Yoga, Kids Yoga and is now training to become a teacher in Senior Yoga. Yoga is her happy place and safe space, a way to find balance and focus in life. As a teacher, she loves empowering others and make everyone feel welcome. We are really happy and excited that she has joined us at Sanga Yoga! I met with Kristin to learn more about her relationship with yoga and her mother baby yoga classes in Oslo.
How did yoga become a part of your life?
“I was living in Cambodia when I had my first child. After becoming a mother, combined with working from when she was very little as there were no maternity leave after six weeks, I started to practice yoga regularly. I practiced not only on the mat, but in everyday life. It became an important tool to help me through this fragile situation in life. I started to realize that I am the most important person in my baby’s life, and that my wellbeing matters. Moving back to Norway, and later on becoming pregnant with my second child, yoga became a way to find a community. I found that mother baby yoga was a place to relax, sing, laugh, cry, learn, socialize, find support… and most importantly, a place where we felt welcome on our own premises.”
Tell me more about your mother baby classes!
“My classes are set up very much around the babies’ premises. They are always welcomed to the class by a funny song, and throughout the practice we add in playful elements to entertain them. In addition to a short meditation to connect with the breath and a Savasana (relaxation), I try to include three parts: yoga for mothers, yoga for babies, and yoga together or a baby massage. From my experience – if the babies are happy, mums are more relaxed and get more out of the practice. And of course there is always room for sharing and socialization with other mums.”
What are some of the themes you will focus on in class?
“The classes will have different themes, which could include ‘sanga’ (building a community), acceptance, transitions, cultivating inner strength, awareness, and making yourself a priority. Some classes focus more on opening or strengthening different parts of the body. It depends a lot on the group. There is always room to request a focus on a special topic or area of the body that really needs attention today.”
Who can join your classes?
“No previous experience is required. The classes are perfect for moms with babies from 6 weeks to 9 months. When it comes to the babies, especially at the age from 3 – 9 months, they usually really enjoy it, which is an added benefit for the moms.”
I’m nervous about bringing my baby to class. The others might have really calm and quiet babies, but I don’t. Can we still join?
“Of course!! The babies are welcome as they are, and there is no expectation that they are supposed to behave in a certain way. It’s like if you go for a nice and quiet walk in the forest, you don’t ask the birds to stop singing. They are a natural part of the environment. As are the babies, and they only enrich the experience. They are also our greatest teachers, we can learn so much from having them around. Its really precious to see the beautiful interactions between the mothers and babies, and I feel privileged to take part in the beginning of their amazing journey together.”
What if I need to feed or change diapers?
“Everything is allowed in the classes. If you need feed, soothe, change diapers or go for a walk around the room with your baby, that’s not a problem at all. It’s ok to come late too. Following a schedule with a baby is not easy and we completely understand that!”
